Firstly we need to recognize that the swords of the middle ages were constantly changing and that different regions used different weapons of choice. These weapons were adapted to deal with the different armors that were created each year.

The size of the weapons varied greatly and you could have a sword that ranged from a size of thirty one inches all the way up to seventy two inches long. Length of the sword did not determine the weight as much as the thickness so the length was mostly dictated by the fighting style of the particular warrior.

Swords such as: broadswords, great swords, scimitars, long swords, falchion swords and even cutting swords are all medieval swords. These swords were used by different types of troops and in different time periods.

Scimitars had wickedly curved blades and cruel sharp edges. This weapon was used by desert dwellers and tended to be a light weight model.

The broadsword was a thirty inch blade with two edges. Barbarians loved to do battle with this weapon at very close ranges.

The great sword was the longest of the medieval swords and could stretch for as long as seventy two inches. These weapons had long handles and could be wielded with two hands. They were the heaviest of the weapons and could weigh up to ten pounds each.

Long swords were one handed weapons that could be as long as 50 inches. These weapons were fantastic for warriors that wanted a long range one handed fighting sword.

Cutting swords were light weight medieval swords that had very sharp edges. This weapon did not last long after the invention of thick metal armor.

The falchion sword was a heavier and thicker version of the scimitar. These weapons were also used by men on horseback. They had one sharp edge and could make wicked cuts when wielded properly.

The swords described above are all fantastic collectible swords. When looking for a sword to display think of the swords you read about in this article. Choose a weapon that fits your personality and the personality of your home display area.
